About John Crane Inc.

John Crane was first established in 1917 as the Crane Packing Company, initially focusing on the manufacturing of packing and gasketing products. In 1922 and 1928, John Crane expanded upon their product offerings with the introduction of Condenser Tube Packing and metallic water pump packing. John Crane’s metallic water pump packing proved popular for use on automobiles, and all Chrysler cars utilized John Crane mechanical seals on their water pumps by 1938.

In 1939, John Crane invented the world’s first automotive mechanical seal. Around this time, John Crane’s seals also began to prove popular with the United States Navy, and the company was awarded a U.S. Navy “E” Award from the years of 1941 to 1949. During the 1950’s, John Crane expanded their facilities with the purchase of 26 acres in a suburb of Chicago, Illinois, and by 1956, construction of the facility was complete with five manufacturing buildings.

Leading into the 2000’s, John Crane continued to expand upon their product offerings and applications, introducing various products that met high standards. At this time, the company also continued to acquire various businesses to further develop their manufacturing capabilities. Presently, John Crane carries on with the development of seals and gasket products in which their history was built upon.

• Filtration Systems: John Crane’s filtration system products serve applications such as fuel gas, fuel oil, liquids, seal gas, replacement filters and elements, etc.  
• Packing: John Crane has a portfolio of various packing products including those such as braided synthetics, graphite gaskets, polyimide, graphite braided, injectable packing, and more.
