About Mitsubishi
Mitsubishi’s story first began in 1917 when the Mitsubishi Model A was introduced to Japan from Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Co. The company Mitsubishi Heavy Industries was later established in 1934 through the merging of Mitsubishi Shipbuilding and Mitsubishi Aircraft Co. and focused on the production of aircraft, railroad cars, ships, and machinery. After the end of WWII, Mitubishi began producing vehicles once again, though the Allied occupation of Japan saw Mitsubishi split into three companies. In the 1960’s, the Japanese Economy began to improve and Mitsubishi began to manufacture a series of cars for consumer use. In 1970, Mitsubishi Motors Corporation was formed as a subsidiary operating under its parent focusing on the development of automotives. During this decade, Mitsubishi sought foreign alliances, selling Chrysler shares in order to sell to the United States market. Through the 1980’s, Mitsubishi continued their expansion into the United States, entered the Chinese market, as well as went public in 1988. The 1990’s proved to be years of success for Mitsubishi as well through the rising popularity of their 4-wheel drives and SUVs. In 2016, Mitsubishi joined the Renault-Nissan Alliance through a major stock purchase by Nissan.
