About Tellabs

Tellabs’s story began in 1975 when Michael Birk, alongside others with electrical engineering backgrounds, incorporated to form a new telecom company aiming at customers’ specific needs. Their first products were echo suppressors for improving noise quality of phone calls. By 1980, the company went public and then began producing echo cancellers for phones which served as an improvement on their previous design. Over the next 10 years, Tellabs expanded globally and financially to much success. It was at this time that they began their acquisitions of other businesses, as well as moved into digital cross connect systems. In the turn of the century, the telecommunications industry saw its collapse and many thought that Tellabs would not last. Nevertheless, as Krish Prabhu took the position as CEO of the company, they changed the company’s aim to the Internet and VoIP calling which was proving to be very popular. During this time, they began to acquire companies such as AFC and Marconi Communications North American Access, helping them obtain a large customer base and over one million deployed lines. This decision proved extremely successful and increased their sales, pulling them out of the telecom collapse. The global investment company Marlin Equity, however, acquired Tellabs in 2013 with the hopes of developing Tellab’s OLAN technology, which has now become their new company focus. Currently, Tellabs has representation in 30 countries worldwide.
