About ZMD
ZMD first began in 1961 as a research institute by the name of Arbeitsstelle für Molekularelektronik. The institute was established and led by Werner Hartmann, a German physicist, and focused on the development of technologies for the use of manufacturing integrated circuits. In 1965, they moved to a combine which was responsible for most of East Germany’s electronic component production at the time. It was during these years that ZMD manufactured many of their first products, including a p-n junction, bipolar junction transistor, and an integrated circuit. Through the end of the 1960’s and into the 2000’s, the institute continuously expanded in both size and portfolio of products. They also had various name changes until 1993 when ZMD GmbH was founded. In 2000, ZMD sold their subsidiary, ZFOUNDRY, thus becoming fabless and then established themselves as an AG company. For the years leading up to their acquisition by IDT, ZMD continued to develop various products, innovating automotive and industrial electronics, medical technology, and more.
