About AMD
In 1969, Jerry Sanders and seven of his colleagues formed the company Advanced Micro Devices, or AMD as they are more commonly known as today. AMD launched their business as a second sourcing supplier, as well as for producing logic chips that met US Military standards. By 1970, they were selling their first products and oversaw a great increase of sales over the next year. By 1972, AMD went public and three years later, they had 212 products on the market, 49 of which were proprietary. By 1975, AMD had also debuted their own microprocessor technology for the consumer market. In 1977, the German manufacturing company, Siemens, bought 20% of AMD’s stocks which gave them the monetary ability to begin microcomputer development, as well as increase their production lines.
By the end of the 1970’s, AMD bought back their shares from Siemens, entered the New York Stock Exchange, and expanded their facilities across the nation and entered their business into the telecommunications market. In the 1980’s, Intel and AMD signed an agreement, as per IBM’s request for Intel, to be second source manufacturers for each other’s equivalent chips. During this time, AMD continued to heavily research new technology and development and became very well regarded as a business, eventually joining the Fortune 500 list. During the microchip sales slump of the mid 1980’s, AMD continued to thrive utilizing aggressive innovation and waves of product releases, this persistence continuing through the end of the decade and into the early 1990’s as they began to compete directly with Intel with their own developed microprocessors. Concurrently, AMD also went public with their successful joint flash memory business venture with Fujitsu in 2005, much to their success. The next year, AMD saw the acquisition of ATI technologies in which they entered the graphics processing market. Up to the present, AMD has conducted multiple successful acquisitions, as well as begun executing a plan to restructure and focus their business on computing and graphics.
