About Avaya
Avaya is an American multinational technology company based in Santa Clara, California that specializes in business communications. Avaya was formed during a restructuring of telecommunications company Lucent in 2000. The company rearranged many of its assets into separate entities. Avaya was a publicly traded company until 2007, when it was acquired by two private equity firms, Silver Lake Partners and TPG Capital for $8.2 billion.
In 2009 Avaya launched Aura, an integrated communications system, and acquired Nortel Enterprise’s assets for $900 million soon after. The following year, Avaya supplied converged-network equipment for the Winter Olympics, and in 2011 acquired Sipera Systems for its session border controller and unified communications security applications, as well as Aurix and Radvision.
Avaya filed for bankruptcy protection under Chapter 11 in January of 2017, listing $5.5 billion in assets and $6.3 billion in debts. As a part of monetizing its assets in this period, Avaya sold its networking business and associated products to Extreme Networks for $100 million. In 2019, Avaya entered a partnership with RingCentral to produce Avaya Cloud Office, a unified communications solution.
