About SAE International
SAE International’s story began with the rise of automobile manufacturers across the world throughout the beginning of the 1900’s. During this time, many auto manufacturers looked to each other for solving common design problems and for the creation of standards to follow. Peter Heldt and Horace Swetland were two magazine publishers who noticed this trend and spearheaded the ideas that would lead to the creation of SAE. Swetland continued writing upon these concerns of automotive engineering and the Society of Automobile Engineers was founded in New York City in 1905. Andrew L. Riker and Henry Ford served as the initial president and vice president respectively, and over the first decade of the company, they faced steady growth and began publishing a technical journal and various papers. As they continued to grow, the American Society of Aeronautic Engineers, Society of Tractor Engineers, and the power boating industry called for SAE to provide technical standards for their industries as well. From this meeting, the representation of engineers for all mobility professions was created and the name was changed to the Society of Automotive Engineers. Through the years and up to the present, the society grew in numbers and industries as it created worldwide chapters, adapted to new technology, and continued its diversity. As of 2017, the SAE has surpassed over 138,000 members worldwide and continued to publish.
